I visited the famous Fat Hippo Burger restaurant located at 52 Low Petergate, York YO1 7HZ.

They gained fame after going viral on TikTok in 2022 for their Project D Burger, and they have no plans of slowing down as they continue to open branches across the UK.

Their motto “Good Food, Messy Fingers, Juicy burgers” is not just a marketing gimmick. Fat Hippo is renowned across the country for their giant, succulent burgers and huge cheese ball starter.

My service was quick, efficient, and they are extremely cautious of allergens. Making the restaurant suitable for everyone, as they serve vegan and gluten-free products as well.

It all started way back in 2010, when founder, Mike Phillips, had an ambitious business plan during his university days.

He opened a cosy little end terrace in Jesmond, which quickly became a firm favourite in the popular Newcastle suburb.

Known for its quality ingredients, quirky flavours, and welcoming atmosphere, soon made a name for themselves in Newcastle for their indulgent burgers.

My Experience at Fat Hippo in York

On a busy bank holiday weekend, we made a reservation at Fat Hippo York, which is located on the bustling high street. It’s hard to miss this restaurant with its huge windows and signs.

The Fat Hippo Entrance

However, I did notice that the entrance is not very disability-friendly, as there are three cobble steps leading to a small, dark corridor.

Making the restaurant seem unwelcoming at first appearance.

As I entered the restaurant, there was a large bar and three high-seated tables in front of the huge windows.

Every table in view was occupied, creating a lively and buzzing atmosphere. I was greeted at the door by an extremely friendly member of the management team and was swiftly showed us to our table.

Menus were already placed on my table, and within five minutes, the waitress came over to introduce herself.

She asked if I had dined with them before and if I had any allergens? I had visited Fat Hippo before and didn’t have any allergens. She then proceeded to take our drinks order, I ordered a pint of Pepsi Max.

The walls of the restaurant were designed in all black, with quirky quotes relevant to the burger restaurant painted on them.

I really liked the design as it didn’t need bright colours to bring the place to life. The large windows brought in plenty of light, adding to the modern and youthful vibe of the restaurant.

After a little while, my drink hadn’t arrived yet, so I was getting a bit impatient. However, the waitress soon came over to take our food order.

The Food at Fat Hippo York

I ordered the viral Cheese Balls as a starter and the Fat Hippo Beef Burger with fries as my main course.

I also asked the waitress to check on my drink, and shortly after I made the request, my drink arrived.

Cheese ball starter

To my surprise, my Cheese Ball starter arrived in no time, and I could see why they went viral.

These huge balls of cheese deep-fried in a beer batter coating, drizzled with hot buffalo sauce and ranch sauce, were sensational.

The buffalo sauce was the perfect combination with the cheese, and I couldn’t get enough of it.

However, I would advise eating them while they are still hot, as if they get too cool, the cheese turns into a ball of rubber cheese.

After my starter was cleared, my main course arrived shortly after. The burger was nothing short of spectacular.

The Fat Hippo Burger is a double smashed beef burger, oozing with American cheese, smoked bacon, chorizo, two freshly battered onion rings, and Fat Hippo’s signature sauce.

It was easily one of the best burgers I’ve tasted in York, and once I started eating, I couldn’t stop.

However, I thought the fries were just average as they were too thin and the potato inside was non-existent. I plan to try the hand-cut chips on my next visit.

Throughout my meal, my waitress checked on me regularly, and once I had finished, she cleared my plates and asked if I needed anything else.

I replied no, and I didn’t feel rushed to leave. She waited until I asked her for the bill, which was a nice touch.

The total cost for my starter, main course, and drink came to £26, which I found to be reasonably priced for the quality of food and service in a sit-down restaurant in York.

I would highly recommend making a reservation, especially on weekends, bank holidays, and during half term. While they do allow walk-ins, priority is given to those with bookings.

However, if you’re not seated immediately, there is always seating available at the bar where you can have a drink while waiting for your table.
