My First-Time Experience at The Gym Group York, Foss Island

Fitness is a necessity to live a fruitful life which is why gyms are always a fantastic way to get and remain healthy.

The Gym Group in York is cheap, accessible and a welcoming place that is perfect for new starters like me!

🏋 Here’s everything The Gym Group York has to offer and my honest first impressions.

What Is The Gym Group?

The Gym Group was founded in 2008 by John Treharne, a former England squash player, with the vision of providing high-quality, low-cost gym facilities to the public.

Since its inception, the company has grown rapidly, expanding its presence across the UK.

My Fist Impressions of The Gym Group York

When driving past you can easily see the building on the side of the road and the big glass pane allows a grandiose insight of what the gym holds.

I found this appealing and I know most people who don’t want to enter a scary new place like the gym are able to look in and see what The Gym Group has to offer.

The Gym Group is tucked away in Foss Islands located next door to Halfords and within my first time of arriving, I did struggle to find the entrance. In fact the entrance is to the back of the building.

From here it was smooth sailing, I entered the gym using my unique 8 digit code and again at the entrance pods. You can download your own QR code for easier and quicker access which I will remember to do for next time.

My Experience At The Gym Group York

I did notice that the Gym can get very busy. We arrived at 4:15pm and by 5pm there were limited equipment to choose from.

Unless you do not mind waiting for certain equipment, I found that the best time to workout is between 9pm-11pm but this is only my preference. The Gym Group is 24/7 which is great as it able to work round anyones life style.

I found it easy to navigate around the gym with the layout categorized in different sections of the gym like, cardio area, free weights, weighted machines, Olympic squat racks and upstairs hold a training/ exercise lessons area, toilets and changing rooms.

✔️ My favorite part of The Gym Group was how clean and organized the place was. All the weights are racked in order of weight and staff are consistently walking around upholding the standard of the gym.

My biggest fear when visiting any gym is not knowing where anything is and people looking at me knowing I’m lost and not knowing what I’m doing and here I didn’t feel this once.

Overall, I have honestly had no issues with The Gym Group York. Everyone I have encountered at the gym have always been polite, everyone is in the same boat as you, minding their own business and working on themselves.

This has created a friendly and tranquil environment in where I feel very comfortable to perform my workouts.

Does The Gym Group Have Hydration Stations?

I loved how much The Gym Group had to offer especially the Hydration Station.

As you enter the building theirs 3 vending machines that sell protein shakes, energy drinks and bottles of water.

There’s also a Gold Standards Whey Protein machine, which dispenses fresh cups of 25g protein drinks available in strawberry and vanilla for £2.50 which is a cheaper alternative to the bottles in the vending machines.

I really liked that they had a Vanga Sports Water that I’ve seen in many Gyms, this is an add on to your Monthly Membership for only £4.

For myself, I would recommend to bring your own water bottle as there are free water fountains around the gym for you to refill, if you want to save that extra bit of cash like me.

Does The Gym Group York Have Changing Rooms?

There are male and female facilities on site. I can’t speak for the female facilities but the mens have a large communal changing area with locker, mirrors, 5 shower and toilet facilities.

The Gym Group Membership Prices

The pricing of any gym is a huge factor for joining and the standard price for The Gym Group is 26.99 a month plus a 15 pounds joining fee.

However, if you’re a student you’re able to get a 20% discount over a 9 month period.

There’s very limited gyms in York that offer as much as The Gym Group does for less that £30 a month.

Does The Gym Group York Offer Fitness Classes and Lessons?

I personally haven’t tried any of the lessons but i’ve only heard positive feedback. They seem motivating and a great way to push you to reach your targets.

Lessons available are, Bums and Tums, Abs blast, Circuit, hiit, strength training and pt taster.

Does The Gym Group York Have Parking?

The Gym Group does have it’s own car park located at the entrance.

Once you have parked, you will need to enter your registration plate inside the gym to register your vehicle. There is free parking but parking restrictions may apply.
