I had the pleasure of dining at a hidden gem in York, Lendal Cellars. Nestled in an old Augustinian Friary, this charming establishment has been transformed into one of York’s most captivating British pubs.

📍 Located at 26 Lendal, York YO1 8AA, Lendal Cellars is part of the Greeneking Company.

The dim lights and stone archway in the dining area gave an air of mystery, making it a must-visit for anyone seeking a unique and unforgettable dining experience.

Brief History Of Lendal Cellars York

Lendal Cellars has a rich history dating back to the medieval period.

Originally part of the extensive wine cellars of a 13th-century abbey, the site has been a cornerstone of York’s storied past.

Over the centuries, it has served various purposes, including storage for merchants and a refuge during times of conflict.

Today, it stands as a vibrant pub, offering a unique blend of historical ambiance and modern hospitality, inviting visitors to experience a taste of York’s heritage in a truly unique setting.

My First Impressions of Lendal Cellars York

Firstly, I struggled to find Lendal Cellars tucked away down an alleyway with limited signage.

Stepping inside, I discovered that the venue is small and all underground, with no windows. However, the absence of natural light was compensated by the enchanting glow of fairy lights, creating a truly beautiful and magical ambiance within the pub.

There is also a small beer garden at the far end of the alleyway, complete with an outdoor TV perfect for the Euros, I couldn’t resist not having a pint outside before going inside.

The Food at Lenal Cellars York

For £5.95, I got the Karaage sticky chicken which is a small Japanese-inspired dish made of fried chicken in sticky BBQ sauce with spring onion, toasted sesame seeds, and red chili.

The chicken was crispy on the outside, covered in the sauce which was flavourful and mouth-watering. The chili added an extra bit of spice, making the chicken dish perfect.

I also got a flat iron steak for £15.45, which is served with house-seasoned fries and tomatoes, as well as your choice of sauce out of merlot beef dripping gravy, Béarnaise, or peppercorn sauce.

I chose to have it with the Bearnaise sauce.

I had the option of either having the steak cooked pink or well done which is unusual as many places offer more options. I opted for pink and the steak was cooked to perfection, the quality of the steak was unreal.

➡️ Lastly, my partner got the Fish and Chips for £14.95. A main dish with a large cod and thickly-cut chips.

It also comes with a lemon and your choice of mushy or garden peas. As well as the option to add curry sauce or bread and butter.
