If you ever find yourself walking around the centre of York looking for somewhere relaxed to eat and drink, a great place to take a trip to is The Hop York on Fossgates.

We’d heard stories about their amazing pizzas, so we had to go check it out!

My First Impressions of The Hop York

The Hop looks like a proper traditional bar from the outside and fits right in with York’s historic streets.

As soon as I walked in, it felt busy but welcoming. The place was lively without being too loud, you could hear music playing softly whilst people were chatting.

I grabbed a seat and immediately felt part of the atmosphere but far enough away from the crowded bar to relax and look over the menu properly.

What I Ordered At The Hop York

I went for a ‘Carne’ pizza (Spicy Beef, Chorizo, Chicken and Pepperoni) then i added black olives. It sounds simple, but sometimes simple is best, especially when it’s done properly.

When the pizza arrived, it looked great. The base was soft, with a slight crisp on the edges. The meat was full of flavour and didn’t feel greasy. The black olives added a salty taste that worked really well with the richness of the cheese and meat.

The first bite confirmed that this was a good pizza. Nothing felt soggy or heavy. Each slice was filling without being too much. It was the kind of pizza you enjoy all the way through, not just the first few slices.

The Hot Honey Fries worked surprisingly well alongside the pizza. The sweetness and heat from the hot honey added something quite different, especially when sprinkled with fresh feta that brought a unique freshness to the dish.

It’s a small thing, but having a good side makes the whole meal feel more complete. If you’re visiting The Hop for pizza, I’d definitely recommend adding a side like this if you’re hungry.

The Atmosphere At The Hop York

One thing The Hop does really well is atmosphere. You could pop in just for a quick pint, come for a proper meal, or stay for the evening and enjoy live music later on.

Inside, it’s a mix of old and new furniture. There are wooden floors, brick walls, and traditional pub features, but it doesn’t feel dated. The lighting is warm, and the long bar immediately catches your attention.

Whats On Tap at The Hop York

As boring as i am i ordered a Diet Coke on my visit but i couldn’t stop admiring the selection of cask ales and beers The Hop had to offer. There’s a wide selection of gin, spirits, wine, and cocktails on their menu too.

The Hop is a must visit for beer lovers in York! Being the sister brewery to Ossett, The Hop offers a fantastic selection of SALT’s modern craft beers that shouldn’t be missed.

Was It Worth the Money?

My Carne Pizza with the added Black Olives came too £21.50! The pizza it’s self was one of the best i’ve had in York complemented by the hot honey fries filling and cooked to perfection.

What your thoughts? Would you pay this much.
