While I did have a bit of an issue finding it Moorland Nature Reserve, it’s not well sign posted, as soon as I stepped into this small Edwardian garden, I was in awe.
There was just something ever so special about the stunning collection of wild flowers.
While I visited Moorland Nature Reserve in the summer, I can only imagine that the place would look drop-dead gorgeous all year round.
I’m personally excited to return in Autumn to see the Autumn trees.
My Experience at Moorland Nature Reserve

It is evident that the team at the Wildlife Trust works incredibly hard to keep the place in perfect condition and litter free.
Honestly, when I stepped into Moorland Nature Reserve, it genuinely looked like one of the most well-kept nature reserves I had ever seen.
Unfortunately, Moorlands isn’t a dog friendly reserve. Which could be a let down to most but personally i can see why, many nature reserves working hard to keep wildlife in there reserves and dog could deter them.
Through my visit you get to learn about the history of the reserve.
It was originally planted in 1955, Moorlands has quickly grown into a beautiful woodland, peppered with some stunning flowers, some of which you would struggle to find elsewhere in York.
As a nature reserve, Moorlands has managed to attract its fair share of mammals and birds.
While I didn’t spot too many during my trip, it’s known to play host to various bats and woodland birds such as:
- tits
- nuthatch
- woodpeckers
- and the odd woodcock
You’ll notice various bat boxes attached to the trees, and if you’re lucky, you may spot a bat or two flying in and out of there.
The trail is a short 1km loop, with mostly flat surfaces. The trail is wheelchair accessible with plenty of benches along the way.
My personal favourite spot is at the pond where i like to sit and look at the wildlife.
Is There Things To Do For kids?
Considering the rather small size of Moorlands, I was intrigued by how much focus had been put on keeping the children entertained.
For example – there’s a treehouse for the kids to play in. Although it is more of a viewing platform for bird watchers, children are going to love climbing up and getting a good view over the reserved.
There’s also an educational hut with a couple of activities to teach them about nature.
My kids genuinely walked away from Moorlands having learned something – which is rare for our day outs.
They also hold seasonal events like the most recent Moorlands Easter Egg Hunt.
