Travelling Man is known as the most popular graphic novel and board game shop in york, located at 74 Goodramgate, York YO1 7LF, and serving 100s of customers each day.
They sell a large collection of merchandise that can’t be found in just any store.
So let’s look into the Travelling Man, a sanctuary for all of our inner geeks.
What Is Travelling Man York?
Travelling Man is a shop that sells various merch and products linked to mangas, animes, board games, and comics.
The first ‘Travelling Man’ was established in 1991 on Hyde Park Corner in Headingley and continued to grow over the rest of the UK.
In 2021, Mine and every geek in York’s dream came to life when Travelling Man opened. One of the first store in York to sell such a variety and contain such a varied community, a truly mystical place.
My First Impressions Of Travelling Man York
‘Travelling Man’ is located on Goodramgate, in between The Old York Tea Room and Happy Food Cottage which is usually a bustling street full of lots of tourists and citizens, so I wasn’t surprised I didn’t notice the shop at first glance.
Its exterior is rather simple, with its name in red letters above the door, windows displaying lots of different examples of what can be found inside, as well as advertisement posters which caught my eye, especially the one for the upcoming comic convention which I will most definitely be attending.
Despite the simple exterior, the inside is rather complex, with a vast amount of shelves and sections showing everything the shop has to offer. Apart from the large number of customers, the shop gives off a cool and friendly atmosphere.
What Does Travelling Man Have To Offer?
I was impressed with how much was sold here, there’s too many to list but here are some of the things that stood out to me:
Board Games:
- Wingspan – a competitive game where the goal is the attract birds to your nest.
- Escape series – an adventure game where you and your friends cooperate to escape certain places.
- Kim-Joys magic bakery – A game where players work together to run a magic bakery in the forest.
Mangas/Animes:
- My Hero Academia – A shonen manga and anime series about a boy born into a world that relies on heroes with ‘quirks’ to function, with no quirk. (manga and figures can be bought)
- Demon Slayer: Kimetsu No Yaiba – A shonen manga/anime series about a boy whose family gets killed by demons, leaving only his sister, who’s turned into one. (manga and figures can be bought)
- The Summer Hikaru Died – A horror/slice-of-life manga series about a boy who discovers his best friend has been replaced by an entity from a different world (manga can be bought)
Comics:
- Marvel/DC: Comics and movie/series adaptations showing different heroes and villains that face a threat to the heroes, and how the heroes dispose of them (graphic novels and merch sold)
- Heartstopper: Comic and Series adaptation following a ‘straight’ and gay boy who fall in love and the troubles that they go through together alongside their friends and family (comics can be bought)
- Monstress – Comic series set in 20th-century Asia about a young girl who seems to have a psychic link with a monster. (comics can be bought)
My Experience At Travelling Man York
My favorite part of the shop is the back of the first floor where they sell the manga. They have a large quantity of different series, like my favorite, Demon Slayer.
I recently went to buy one of the mangas for Ā£5.99 and a kanae figure for around Ā£15, which were both in great condition and relatively cheap for what I got.
The front of the shop contains comics, merch, and figures which is where I get my figures from lastly, upstairs displays all the board games they own as well as tools for taking care of them.
It’s rather crowded at the front and sometimes hard to maneuver your way around people, but everyone is friendly and the staff always greet me like i’m part of the Travelling Man family.
Does Travelling Man Have An Online Store?
Yes! On their website, The store offers extra merchandise that sometimes can’t be found in-store as well as easier categories to follow and discounts on items and shipping if you become a member.
I’ve never personally ordered from the site as I prefer to visit the store.
Do Travelling Man York Hold Events?
Travelling Man often holds and promotes events in the community that link back to the stores’ products and interests.
Things such as board game competitions and comic conventions are held regularly nearby, like the one happening on the 16-17th of November, and Travelling man is glad to promote and even host them.
I struggle finding information on events through there website but I recommend using their social channels to find out what coming up next.
