I visited Wagamama York at 77-81 Goodramgate, York YO1 7LS for a casual lunch with friends today to see if their mouth-watering ramen was up to standards with the fame and popularity it receives.
They specialize in Japanese-style cuisine with a large range of Asian dishes and sides.
So, is this just another chain restaurant, or is this as close to authentic York can get?
My Experience at Wagamama York
Throughout my experience, I was impressed by the service. The waiters were so polite and friendly, taking the time to have a small conversation with us.
🥢 Each meal was cooked fresh to order, all meals served quickly and the presentation of each dish showed a lot of care. The quality food, the atmosphere, and the service all made this experience worth the cost.
My Food at Wagamama York
Wagamama York has a huge variety of dishes including different Hotpots, Donburi, ramen, Tappanyaki, and Curry all with plenty of vegan choices.
There’s also a separate drinks menu that’s not as big but i perceptually liked the selection of smoothies.
🍜 We started things off by ordering drinks, a tropical smoothie and a diet coke. For starters, we chose the Pulled Pork Gyoza and the Duck Gyoza. Following with the main courses, we went with the Tantanman Beef Brisket Ramen and the Chicken and Prawn Pad-Thai.
Also, taking the staffs advice, we ordered the kimchi and miso soup. We finished up by ordering some matcha douchi and a matcha chouxnut for dessert.
All our meals were warm and fresh my only issue was the Ramen was pretty bland and lacked flavor compared to other restaurants in York, I personally wouldn’t order this again but would like to try the range of curry dishes they have to offer.
The Ambiance at Wagamama York
The restaurant had a warm and welcoming atmosphere.
As soon as I walked through the doors I caught the delightful scent of the food from the kitchen, which added to the authentic vibe and ambiance.
The decor gave a more modern and traditional setting commonly found in chain restaurants. It had a sharp, clean layout with a thorough black-and-white theme, accompanied by wooden tables and rectangular stools.
I found the stools to be rather uncomfortable and requested to move to one of the booths that was available.
The Service at Wagamama York
As soon as we walked in, a staff member was waiting for us at the host stand, greeting us with a friendly smile.
They sat us down immediately and menus were already placed on the tables, after a short wait another team member came by to check if we were ready to order or if we needed a bit more time.
🍲 As the menu was confusing to me I asked the waiter what he recommended, him suggesting the kimchi and miso soup, which sounded good, so I went for it. Our drinks arrived shortly after and them 1 by 1 our dishes arrived.
Ideally, I would have liked to get my starters first, as a starters, but I understand that they serve the dishes as soon as they’re ready to keep everything fresh and hot, which was appreciated.
Is Wagamama York Worth The Price?
My total bill came to £74.19, which may seem expensive but for a 3 course dining experience it’s reasonably priced.
Overall, I feel the price is justified by the servings you get accompanied by delicious, cultural food. I would definitely visit Wagamama York again.
