This is why I’m in love with York! I discovered The Foss Fairy Trail whilst walking home from an amazing day in York, this mystical path hidden away runs alongside the River Foss at A1036, Heworth, York YO31 8RP.
It was created by our local community and ‘The Chair Tracy’ during the early stages of lockdown in 2021. It’s a sight to see for all and here is why.
My Foss Fairy Trail Experience York
When I started the trail, there was this small board that shows a map someone drew by hand, I found this useful because I had never heard of this place before and it showed me the route that i would take through the trail. You can find the map below.
Best part of the walk for me is all the tiny fairy houses that the community have made my personal favorite one was the fairy rock slide at the start of the walk near the brown gate which was a small blue house with white decors above a pile of rocks which I thought was very creative.
I also enjoyed that there were books available on a shelf near the picnic benches which allowed myself to escape from the city and enjoy the beautiful scenery surrounding the area.
The pathway was very clear and dry, there was no mud unless you walked away to look at the houses in closer detail. The walk is around an hour long, starting at The Monks Bridge next to the river before slowly making its way into a woodland scenery.

Preparing for the Walk
Here are just a few things that i wish i knew before visiting The Foss Fairy Trail York:
- The trail is open to everyone for 24 hours, every day of the year, with free entry.
- Their isn’t any shelter along the pathway so make sure to check the weather ahead of time and dress suitably.
- The Path is not disable friendly as there is step at the entry of the trail.
- Majority of the Fairy Houses are located on grass or trees so be aware of muddy feet and wear suitable footwear.
- Benches are available at the entrance of the trail but limited seating along the path.
- No public toilets and the closest been a 24 minute walk into the city center.
- The trail does not have it’s own parking facilities.

Where To Park In York?
There is parking street side but there is a max stay for 1 hour and cost only £1.20.
🚗 If your looking for longer stay we recommend Foss Bank Car Park. Opening times are 8am – 8pm. This is a pay and display car park and cost up to £2.30 per hour.
Final Thoughts
In comparison to other woodland or river walks, this experience is way more immersive and fun for younger audiences.
Although food and bathrooms aren’t particularly close, they are still in walking distance of the trail. This path is a fun way to support the community and the effort they put in to make it a nice place to visit.
