Vintage Inns is a collection of charming country pubs across the UK, each offering a unique blend of historic ambiance, hearty food, and warm hospitality.
π» These establishments are often situated in picturesque locations, providing a cozy retreat for both locals and visitors. The Dormouse in York is a prime example of what Vintage Inns has to offer.
First Impressions at The Dormouse York
As soon as I stepped through the door, the striking interior caught my eye with its intriguing bar display and vintage wooden beams.
The pub was alive with conversation, with a drinking area to my left filled with locals and dog walkers, and the restaurant to the right.
π I appreciated the bartender reminding me to register my vehicle, a helpful tip, given that I often forget despite the numerous signs.
The Service At The Dormouse York
Initially, I didn’t have high hopes for the service at The Dormouse Inn.
It took us while to be seated with only two staff members at the bar trying to make drinks, take orders, and greet customers, it seemed they were stressed and understaffed.
However, the amazing waitress who served us was a ray of sunshine.
π Despite being rushed, she took her time at our table, spoke with us and really made us feel settled. Her attentive and friendly demeanor significantly enhanced our dining experience.
The Food At The Dormouse York
I ordered the signature burger, which was incredibly juicy, and surprisingly burger sauce and pulled meat works very well together which I was concerned about when first ordering.
The single patty was just right; a double would have been too much. The burger came with skin-on fries that were crispy and fresh, perfectly seasoned with a touch of salt.
π My partner ordered the pepperoni pizza, which was enjoyable and generously topped with pepperoni.
She would have preferred it cooked a little longer, as the base was soft in parts, but it didn’t stop her from eating the whole thing.

My Drinks at The Dormouse Inn
When it comes to pub dining, Iβm very old-fashioned and prefer to order at the bar.
It allows me to see the range of cask and other draught products. On this occasion, it was nice for the waitress to take our order. She had good knowledge of the products they sold, which I think is key to table service.
Since I was driving, I ordered a Diet Coke, and my partner had a Coca-Cola.
While these choices might seem boring, the cokes were served in ice-cold glasses, garnished, and the bottles were also chilled, adding a touch of class compared to dispensed drinks from other pub dining experiences I’ve had.
Is It Worth the Cost?
Personally, I think so! The pizza was more expensive than I expected but I was blown away by the quality of the burger.
The overall experience, from the food to the service, was well worth the price and I will be looking to visit again.
π² For two drinks (Coca-Cola and Diet Coke) and two meals (Signature Burger and Pepperoni Pizza), the total came to Β£39.65.
