Step into the heart of York Minster and witness a spectacle like no other as the historic cathedral transforms into a canvas of light and color.
This year, the Minster takes on a new level of enchantment with the breathtaking phoenix light show, commemorating the 1984 fire.
Prepare to be dazzled as the history of York intertwines in a magical display that you won’t want to miss.
My First Impressions Of The York Minster Phoenix Light Show
I purchased our tickets in advance (official tickets are available here) which I’m glad we did as it saves you queuing twice.
We arrived 15 minutes before the show started as stated on the website and to our surprise the Minster was almost empty.
This led me to believe that perhaps the event wasn’t as popular as I thought. However, I was quickly proven wrong. By the time the show began the cathedral was filled with hundreds of eager visitors.
What I personally loved is from the moment you walk through the doors the magical aura fills the room. The walls covered in a deep blue light and the ceiling covered in stars.

We chose to stand towards the back of the Minster, knowing that most of the display would be projected onto the ceiling. This allowed us to take in the full visual spectacle.
One of the most memorable moments of the show was the appearance of the phoenix, a powerful symbol of rebirth rising from the ashes of destruction.
I found this particularly moving, and I captured it in a TikTok video that you can see below.
The use of the phoenix as a metaphor for the Minster’s recovery was visually stunning.
Another memorable moment for me was inclusion of audio clips from news reporters and individuals who witnessed the fire firsthand. These real-life reactions brought an emotional weight to the show.
I did come across a minor issue, the audio quality wasn’t clear towards the back of the Minster making it difficult to hear.
Was It Worth Visiting?
The light show lasts for approximately 20 minutes and costs £7.50 per person. Given the quality of the production and the unique setting, I believe it is well worth the price. The event has gained immense popularity over the years, and it’s easy to see why.
