If you’re planning a trip to York and want to find some great bargains, then Goodramgate is the place to be.
This street is home to the largest concentration of charity shops in York, so you can find everything you need in one place, without having to walk across the city centre.
During my visit to Goodramgate, I explored each charity shop, including RSPCA, Oxfam, British Heart Foundation, Sue Ryder, and The Mind Charity Shop.
I was impressed with the range of products on offer.
I particularly liked the quality of the products. Despite being second-hand, most of the items were in good condition and but the price range varied between shops.
Top 5 Charity Shop Goodramgate York
Here’s my top five charity shops in York, based on their accessibility, quality of products, pricing, and service.
RSPCA
- Address: 5B Goodramgate, York YO1 7LJ, UK
- Open Times: 9am – 4:30pm
- Contact: 01904 466140
What fist drew me in was the front of the shop, with its welcoming feel, but I did notice that there were a few steps to get in, which could pose a problem for disabled access.
I found that the quality of the products on offer was not up to par compared to other shops. There were lots of ladies’ clothes and books, but I wasn’t impressed with the overall selection.
I noticed the staff seemed to be frustrated while working, possibly due to the limited space whilst trying to restock.
Oxfam
- Address: 7 Goodramgate, York YO1 7LJ, UK
- Opening Times:
- Monday – Friday 9:30am – 5:30pm
- Saturday 9am – 5pm
- Sunday 10am – 4pm
- Contact: 01904 659001
I would highly recommend visiting Oxfam as it stands out from other charity shops in terms of the quality of its products.
I was particularly impressed with the bridal room, which had an amazing selection of dresses, hats, and shoes. However, it’s worth noting that booking is required for this room, which can be done by calling in advance.
I found myself spending the most time in this shop as there was also plenty to explore in the men’s wear and home wear sections.
British Heart Foundation
- Address: 11 Goodramgate, York YO1 7LW, UK
- Opening Times:
- Monday – Saturday 9:30am – 5pm
- Sunday 10am – 4pm
- Contact: 01904 612250
As British Heart Foundation is a well-known charity across the UK, I was excited to visit their shop.
I found that the clothing range was large but rather extensive and lacked any real bargains, with prices being similar to other charity shops.
The shop was quite crowded, and the clothes placed in the middle of the room made it difficult to navigate, especially for those with wheelchairs or pushchairs.
Despite the crowdedness, I noticed the staff were amazing and seemed to genuinely care about the cause.
Sue Ryder
- Address: 28 Goodramgate, York YO1 7LG, UK
- Opening Times:
- Monday – Saturday 9:30am – 5pm
- Sunday 10am – 4pm
- Contact: 01904 636900
For those who love a good bargain, I would highly recommend visiting Sue Ryder. This small shop is always fully stocked and well-organized.
I was attracted by the beautiful dresses displayed in the window, and I was pleasantly surprised to discover a hidden vintage collection upstairs, which was very reasonably priced.
Although I didn’t see many staff members around compared to other shops, indicating to myself it may not be the most popular. This may be why the vintage collection was still available.
The Mind Shop
- Address: 25 Goodramgate, York YO1 7LW, UK
- Opening times:
- Monday-Saturday 9:00-17:00
- Sunday 10:00-16:00
- Contact: 01904 639451
Which have recently expanded to a second shop on the same street.
I initially stopped by the smaller building first but found it to be overcrowded and with limited items on offer, which made me feel quite uncomfortable. I couldn’t wait to leave.
Although the larger shop was under construction, it was still accessible, and I was impressed with the wide range of reasonably priced glassware at the back of the shop.
I found that a lot of the clothes were expensive, almost comparable to high street prices.
The staff were friendly and helpful, as one of them kindly informed me about the changing rooms located at the back of the shop when I showed interest in a top.
Conclusion
Based on my experience visiting all the charity shops on Goodramgate York, I would say that Sue Ryder is my personal favourite.
The shop is well-organized, always fully stocked, and has a great selection of vintage items at affordable prices.
While some of the other shops had their strengths, Sue Ryder stood out to me as the best overall.
